The Goal:
The primary aim of this project was to enhance the accessibility and inclusivity of healthcare services for international students in Kingston, Ontario. Despite the presence of institutions like Queen’s University, St. Lawrence College, and the Royal Military College, international students often face challenges in navigating the local healthcare system. The project sought to:
Identify the main obstacles international students encounter when accessing healthcare.
Assess their awareness and understanding of available healthcare resources and insurance policies.
Develop practical solutions to improve the inclusivity and accessibility of the healthcare system for this demographic.

The Challenge:
International students in Kingston confront several barriers that impede their access to healthcare services:
Awareness Gaps: Many students are unaware of local healthcare facilities, including clinics, hospitals, and mental health services.
Insurance Complexity: Understanding health insurance policies proves difficult, leading to confusion about coverage and eligibility.
Cultural and Linguistic Barriers: Differences in cultural norms and language can hinder effective communication with healthcare providers.
Financial Constraints: The cost of healthcare services and insurance can be prohibitive for some students.
These challenges contribute to a less than optimal healthcare experience for international students, necessitating targeted interventions.

The Result
Through comprehensive UX research methods—including surveys of 26 international students, in-depth interviews with 12 participants, a competitive analysis of healthcare systems in similar cities, and a design thinking workshop during the International Student Symposium—the project yielded several actionable insights:
Enhanced Awareness: Developed strategies to improve students’ knowledge of available healthcare resources.
Simplified Insurance Information: Proposed clearer communication methods regarding insurance coverage and policies.
Cultural Sensitivity Training: Recommended training for healthcare providers to better understand and address the cultural needs of international students.
Financial Support Mechanisms: Suggested the implementation of financial assistance programs to alleviate cost-related barriers.
These outcomes aim to foster a more inclusive and accessible healthcare environment for international students in Kingston.
